Do As You Choose Friday

The weekend is here and I don't have a clue as to what do. The weather will be nice tomorrow, but as the case lately, it will be fleeting with rain moving in on Sunday. Half the park will be taken up tomorrow with a private event, so that is looking "iffy" at the moment.

This idle time has given me some space to reflect on where I'm headed and while the road is not clearly paved, I see things beginning to evolve. I realize there is a lot of "me" left and I know the "story" isn't over. It's almost like when I came to my present loft almost 4 years ago. All I saw then were possibilites, a blank canvass to be worked upon. I had no idea then what this loft would contain, but I did know there would be things placed in it.

That is how I see my career transition at this point. One door has closed while another has not opened yet, but I know things will be much more different than before. Yes, I'm older than I was in 1997, but I'm more wise and ready to make a complete change if I have too. Back then I was afraid, now I'm not.

Tea Party Revisionism

Yesterday was the one day out of the year our nation asks something of all of us, yes the dreaded "tax day". It has been reported that more than 70 per cent of Americans receive a refund which means they've paid too much into the system. Naturally, I find this day a necessary evil, one that we don't like, but must be done to keep the country progressing towards prosperity.

Two hundred six years ago, colonists in a new land decided to protest the right to pay tax they felt shouldn't have to pay because the entity they were paying the tax to did not represent their interests. The Boston Tea Party was one of the sparks that started the American Revolution and the founding of our nation. I'm not going to delve into the mechanisms that started the Boston Tea Party, Wikipedia has an excellent article on this, but make no mistake, the spectecle seen across the country yesterday was a slap in the face of those colonists who dared stood in the face of the British Empire and said "NO MORE!"

To have these folks tell it, the "tea parties" that took place across the country yesterday was a modern day version of the original in 1773, one of the decisive moments of our nation's founding. What they won't tell you is that the colonists did not protest that fact they had to pay taxes, their beef was paying tax to a concern that did not represent their interests and it is that fact which makes yesterday's "tea parties" completely bogus.

The people protesting just don't want to pay taxes - period. They love to disguise their feelings in shady terms like "fair tax" or whatever the new flavor of the month is. And as much as they try to say they're not racist or anti-immigration the posters and speakers stoking the flames were a who's who of the rabid right. Even "Joe the Plumber" was there to fan the flames, a person who should be thanking President Obama everyday for giving him 20 minutes of fame is a modern day Quisling, stabbing the man who propelled his fortunes every chance he gets.

What these folks don't realize is that they are expending their energies on the wrong things because as of today guess what? We're still paying taxes and will continue to do so. These folks are the ones slowly being left behind in the early years of the 21st century. They have no ideas, still living in the "it's morning in America" fantasy world of the early 1980s. They so desperately want to go back to that era because all was so white bread and certain - at least in their eyes. Now they see an America that has evolved with different races, creeds and faiths; a world that they can't grasp or comprehend, but one that is looking at them in their rear view mirrors.

That is what these folks are protesting, change, a change they don't or refuse to understand. The colonists in 1773 wanted change, that is why they dumped tea chests into Boston harbor. The folks protesting yesterday want none of it. That stark contrast is the tale of two tea parties.

Chandler Hill....a slight return

Well, I forked over the greenbacks today and signed with Chandler Hill Partners to do a "me" career make over. If the first meeting is any indication then the money is one that will be very well spent. My "career campaign manager" is one sharp woman and yes, she's a sista! It was almost as if she could read my every thought, my every move. She used to work at Coca-Cola in public relations and managed several political campaigns. In other words, she knows her stuff!

Yesterday I received a call from the outplacement firm that Georgia-Pacific uses for it's ex-employees. The result of the two conversations I had with their staff did not give me that "warm, fuzzy" feeling, in fact, comparing them to Chandler Hill is like comparing apples to oranges. The former firm is not going to get me where I want to go.

Sometimes you have to spend cash to make money.

Chandler Hill

Well, I took the plunge today, I signed on with Chandler Hill Partners. They are a career development firm with the task of giving me a complete career makeover.

For people not in the know, in 1997, I lost my job at Nottingham Company and this began a downward spiral that continued until 2001 when I finally was hired by the IRS. I lost everything, apartment, car, furniture and I ended up living like a nomad for several years. This time, I am determined not to repeat that experience. I'm pulling out all of the stops, leaving not a stone unturned. I learned so much from that experience and I'm putting the lessons learned to good use.

That is why I putting a $5500 US financial outlay to this firm with the hopes that my career can get jump started quickly. I don't have much time because the longer I stay out, the less my value becomes. These companies play the games that they do because they know this and in 1997 I was completely blindsided - not this time!

I am keeping all options open and if I never return to product development, fine with me! I've been there and done that so it's time to turn the page onto to some fresh and clean - change I can believe in!

This picture says it all, the sun fading to the west as it illuminates the water tower against a darken sky. The reason I posted this was the fact that yesterday, Defense Secretary, Bill Gates, gave sent his most recent budget proposal to Congress. In it is a death sentence for various weapons systems that are either outdated, costly, not practical in today's geopolitical climate or all of the above. In Georgia and specifically the metro Atlanta area, the F-22 has come to the latter.
People, even a Bush appointee like Bill Gates knows when the time is up on a weapons system. He has to gauge the needs our country has in this new century, not one that was predicated on a cold war scenario. These weapon systems have taken completely different lives of their own, promising the allure of "high paying" jobs where ever they are built, with some being the life blood of the towns they occupy.
When the cold war ended twenty years ago people should have seen this day coming and prepared for the inevitable. The F-22 in particular is not a fighter aircraft suited for the Afgan-Iraqi theatre and is a a white elephant at this point. Yet the workers of this plane are staunch Republicans who love to rant about "welfare recipients" living off their hard earned tax dollars.
The Congressman in this district, Phil Gringrey and Saxy Chambliss are staunch supporters of this kind of porkulus and see no reason why this program should be cut even though this makes welfare look like a ninety-nine cent happy meal.
So, why should the rest of us foot the bill for a fighter that is obsolete? Has it come to this, propping up programs that have long outlived it's usefulness to save $60-80K jobs in an bear of a recession. Have we Americans become that soft that we have to do this to stave off catastrophe.
I say cut this turkey loose, find these workers real work, there's plenty of it out there. We don't need to resort to this kind of silliness to stay relevant - do we?

GOOD PAIN

I saw you sweet and sexy just
the other sunny day

I had to get those digits so I
could give

GOOD
PAIN

To satisfy my sexual thirst
I need your cranium first

I must

FEED
FEED
FEED

your brain so
I can give

GOOD
PAIN

I'll say and do all the right things and
if I'm wrong there'll be

a means to the end because
I want you

AGAIN, AGAIN, AGAIN

as i
give

GOOD
PAIN

At last,
I'm in your head because

we're in your bed

Please, meat your sweet new friend
penetrating

your inner membrane
singing

I GOT 'CHA

I GOT 'CHA
I GOT'CHA

driving you insane

I'm finally in

baby giving

GOOD PAIN!!

ray de oh

long summer days
of lost love ways

juana, ginko and
peace knobs fill the sky

lovers on a Saturday noon
ears attuned in full bloom

listening to rock tunes
on the ray de oh

rhythm and blues made me see
JB in man's world, but

when love died
so did the ray de oh

now

flourine iinsultants fill
the air with silicone chatter

one hit wonders
soak the charts

like strawberry jam
on pop tarts

singing faustian ballards
as the voodoo masses see

the world through
cheap sun glasses

so, play me again
another sample, Mr. Eel

and I'll sell more

snap
crackle
pop

and sex appeal
to the zombie woofs
